In February 2013, Te Taumata Kaumaatua o Ngaati Wairere informed the Crown of Ngaati Wairere’s intention to enter into negotiations to settle its outstanding Treaty of Waitangi claims.
This prompted the need to create a legal body to negotiate the claim. This entity is the Ngaati Wairere Treaty Claims Trust (NWTCT).
On 13 October 2013, two Ngaati Wairere marae, Hukanui and Tauhei, each nominated three trustee representatives. On 19 October 2013, a Ngaati Wairere Hui-a-Iwi passed the following resolutions -
-
That the NWTCT is mandated as the entity to negotiate and settle the Wai 2067 Claim and all outstanding claims of Ngaati Wairere with the Crown.
-
That the six nominated representatives be elected as trustees -
Wayne Te Kerei Harris / Tauhei
Carolyn Hopa / Tauhei
Te Karahau Te Amo / Tauhei
Sonny Wilson / Hukanui
Lillian Pompey / Hukanui
Raewyn Heke / Hukanui
-
That Wayne Te Kerei Harris and Sonny Wilson be elected as Co-Chairs .
The NWTCT was legally ratified upon Trust Deed on 25 October 2013 and established for the following purposes -
-
To specifically negotiate a settlement of the outstanding Treaty of Waitangi Claims of Ngaati Wairere; the negotiations to include the Wai 2067 Claim
-
To establish a Post Settlement Governance Entity (PSGE) to manage settlement assets
-
To hold the Trust Fund and administer the Trust Fund and the liabilities of the NWTCT as Trustees on behalf of all of Ngaati Wairere
The Trust has appointed Carolyn Hopa as Secretary with a secretariat to assist her.
The NWTCT is engaged with the Crown and other relevant parties to progress the settlement of the Wai 2067 Claim and all outstanding Treaty of Waitangi claims of Ngaati Wairere.
These claims pertain to Ngaati Wairere interests outside the Waikato-Tainui Raupatu Boundary.
Claims to lands within the Raupatu and the Waikato River have been settled by the Waikato-Tainui Land Settlement of 1995 and the Waikato-Tainui Waikato River Settlement of 2010.
